An 84-year-old Australian mathematician wants to have a child through cloning; Two women have already agreed to be surrogates for the fetus; The medical institutions in Australia are opposed; "I'm a fighter, I won't surrender"
Frank Hansford-Miller, an 84-year-old Australian mathematician, wants to create offspring in an original way, and to be a pioneer in bringing children into the world through cloning (producing offspring by asexual reproduction). Cloning has so far only been performed in animals (Dolly the sheep, whose name precedes her, is the first and the most famous).
Hansford-Miller's late wife was barren, while he himself lost his virility due to prostate surgery. He has been trying for some time to arouse sympathy for his cause, because, according to him, only through cloning will he be able to have children, but the medical institutions in Australia refuse to allow him to be an experimental pioneer in the application of the technology to humans.
Hansford-Miller said today that following the publication of his story, so far, two women from Papua-Guinea have contacted him, who are willing to be surrogates for his baby. He rejected rumors that claimed that the women offered it for a financial payment: "They want to help me purely out of kindness." However, according to him, if cloning technology becomes accessible to him, he will invest all his money in realizing the dream.
He insists that fertility technologies and treatments have been developed and applied mainly to women, while ignoring men who need treatments. "It's very simple: instead of a baby being created from the mixing of the father's and mother's chromosomes, in my case the entire hereditary structure will be from me. You can take a DNA sample from a drop of saliva, implant it in an egg and put it in the uterus," said the doctor.
The claim that he is too old to raise children upsets him: "I am healthy and can live until the age of 120. I have 36 more years. Isn't that enough to raise a child? I am a fighter, and I have been working on the matter for four years. I will not give up. When the matter becomes possible, I will be here, or anywhere else in the world, where it will be possible for me to fulfill it."
