The name hurricane was coined by Indians, and in their language it means "spirit of the devil" or "storm of a god". Today this name is used to describe traveling cyclones that develop over oceans, especially in the equatorial region.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to the end of November. Under certain conditions, a hurricane can develop to gigantic proportions in a matter of days. A hurricane develops after low air pressure is created by the rise of warm, moist air from the oceans into cold air. This meeting produces a lot of energy that sometimes causes the development of storm clouds accompanied by vertical air currents. The air begins to rotate rapidly counterclockwise in a motion that raises water vapor and adds energy to the storm.
The area of destruction around the eye of the storm may reach approximately 240 square kilometers. Hurricanes are categorized on a scale ranging from 1 to 5. A category 1 hurricane is a storm in which the winds blow at a speed of at least 120 km/h, while in category 5 the winds blow at a speed of more than from 250 km/h. After World War II, hurricanes began to be named after women. Protests by women's organizations caused that at the end of the The 70's also started using male names. The names of hurricanes are predetermined and now the American Meteorological Service knows what the first hurricane in 2007 will be called ("Andrea").
The strongest hurricane recorded in the 20th century was "Gilbert". It hit Jamaica and Mexico in 1988 at a speed of 350 km/h. The USA is also hit by deadly hurricanes. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo hit its shores, causing $9.7 billion in damage and the death of 21 people. "Andrew" hit the USA in 1992 and caused 35 billion dollars in damage and the death of 23 people. The devastation left behind by "Andrew" was so great that in the end about 200 thousand residents were left homeless in Miami. In 1995 Florida was hit by three hurricanes One after the other ("Allison", "Erin" and "Opel") and caused damage of billions of dollars.
