"Jatropha for cooling the earth"

The idea is simple: planting jatropha bushes in hot and dry areas around the world. The researchers claim, based on data from existing jatropha plantations, that "every 10 dunams of jatropha will absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide each year."

I previously wrote about The jatropha, a plant from which fuel can be produced and thus reduce the emission of greenhouse gases that cause global warming and originate from the burning of mineral fuel.

I mentioned that the advantage of jatropha compared to other "fuel crops" is the possibility of growing it in arid areas and areas where it is not possible to grow edible or pasture plants. I also mentioned that if jatropha is grown in fields where edible plants can be grown, then it is appropriate to grow edible plants between the rows of jatropha and thus "kill two birds with one stone". However, agile entrepreneurs began to grow thousands of dunams of the poisonous plant in agricultural areas from which the local residents had been evacuated in many cases. Obviously, the poet "didn't mean" such an initiative.

Now offering German research staff members who publish their work in:Earth System Dynamics Take advantage of the fact that jatropha can be grown in arid regions for carbon dioxide absorption. Hot and dry areas are not the places where people engage in agriculture.

The German research team wants to change this with the intention of helping to slow or stop global warming, the idea is simple: planting jatropha bushes in hot and dry areas around the world. The researchers claim, based on data from existing jatropha plantations, that "every 10 dunams of jatropha will absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide each year." According to their calculation, there are areas of about 100 million square kilometers that are suitable for planting. A planted area of this size will absorb (absorb from the atmosphere) 25 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year. This is an amount that eliminates the emission of carbon dioxide from China, the USA b and the European Union together.

Jatropha plantations in these areas will continue to absorb carbon dioxide for several decades. According to the researchers' calculations, the cost of absorbing a ton of carbon dioxide will be about 50 euros. A price that is in competition with the carbon capture and storage (CCS) methods that exist today. In addition, a computer simulation showed that planted areas of the order of tens of square kilometers will lower the surface temperature and increase the The amount of precipitation - the rain and the dew. [For some reason there is no reference to the possibility of producing fuel from jatropha seeds, which would offset the use of mineral fuel and thus cause another reduction. in emissions (Asaf).]

According to the entrepreneurs, planting jatropha areas on a large scale will allow the growth of trees and other plants (between the rows). The plantings will cause local climate changes that will allow the growth of groves that over the years will change the surface and make it possible to stop irrigation. The jatropha plantations and the groves that will develop in them will continue to absorb carbon dioxide and thus will cause a slowdown in global warming.

"Alia and a thorn in her"
It is clear that the initiative is not without flaws: although the jatropha plantation will grow in dry areas, it is still necessary to water the plants a little. Obviously, water is not an easy resource to obtain in arid regions. In addition, because of the way in which companies and entrepreneurs took over agricultural areas for the development of jatropha plantations, a negative reputation was created for the bush. These two flaws will have to be overcome. The reputation problem will have to be solved with the help of education. As for water, you can use brackish water. Also, it may be worthwhile to transport "grey" water.

The researchers plan to plant an experimental plantation where the initiative will be tested.

  1. Hi Doctor Rosenthal. Has an experiment been conducted since the writing of the post in Israel or in the jatropha world? Are there any results for such an experiment? thanks.

  2. ? Am I supposed to read everything you wrote? I did not see any reference to the problem in the lists of the plant. so be it.
    Good luck with this plant.

  3. to one another:
Despite the "politeness" in your response,
If you bothered to read the lists (which were published by Hidan) concerning jatropha in particular and biofuel in general,
She was present because in the past I have already addressed all the problems and sides that are presented in the "new" list that you "found"...

  4. What do birth control and tycoons have to do with the topic of the article?!
And regardless - birth control is one of the most painful things a government can do to its population and is a prominent sign of totalitarian rule.

  5. What do laws have to do with it? Obviously, those who break the law should be punished. And I agree with you that there are tycoons who do terrible damage. But - the solution is law enforcement, and not adding laws that would harm those who really employ a lot of people.... We both agree on that too.

You spoke earlier about the "restriction of tycoons" - I jumped on that. Now you are talking about law enforcement…

  6. B'
    Stop gabbling.
"The tycoon does not "provide work" for anyone." - So how do you think "he" became a tycoon? Throw money at himself?
This is stupidity - to think the way you think.

  7. The tycoon takes care of his profits, among other things, by minimizing the amount of employees and the wages he pays them.
The tycoon does not give jobs.
There are corrupt tycoons. At least we agree on that.
The damage that one corrupt tycoon causes to humanity is greater than the damage caused by many thousands of corrupt destitutes.
The destitute are limited in every step they take.
    Not so the tycoons.
Therefore the first priority is to enforce the laws on the tycoons.
But enforcing the law on the tycoons is not an easy thing.
    a joke? :
One woman asked the steward to stop the train.
But the steward did not agree under any circumstances because there was no station there.
"This is my train and I will stop where I want," said the woman.

  8. The tycoon takes care of his profits by providing jobs. There are corrupt tycoons and there are corrupt destitutes. But you have a personal agenda based on hatred. Otherwise, there is no explanation for your inclusion.

  9. The tycoon does not "provide work" for anyone.
The tycoon cares about his profits.
I suggest you read the book "Geography of Hunger" (the author's name is a flower from my memory) the book describes in a good way what happens in a world where the tycoons take care of themselves and at whose expense it comes.

  10. ב
You ignore the fact that one tycoon provides work for the parents of those hundred thousand children. It's really hard for me to understand why you hate those who provide jobs for so many people. Hate makes people talk such nonsense...

  11. The restriction of tycoons precedes the restriction of birth.
A hundred thousand children do not cause the emission of pollutants like one tycoon.
Although in the future those who want to survive on Earth will have to address the issue of birth control.
But the restriction of the tycoons belongs to the present. If we don't limit it in the present then there will be no future either.
Even if we limit the birth rate and population growth will stop. Still left with the tycoon problem.

  12. Fascinating article, thank you!
Maybe salvation will grow from here (despite the reservations that appear in the previous response).
I would love to see an in-depth article on birth control that you support as far as I understand (I am also an enthusiastic supporter, for anyone who is willing to listen).
