Hubble reveals a star-studded masterpiece: more than half a million ancient stars

Messier 3 was the first globular cluster in which blue stragglers were detected. Astronomers believe that some of these stars gained material from a companion star through gravitational interactions. The added mass allowed them to heat up and glow bluer and brighter, as if they had returned to an earlier stage in their evolution, even though their true age remained similar to that of the other stars in the cluster. Messier 3's unusual properties may be related to the way it formed. Two distinct populations of stars have been identified in the cluster, suggesting that it was formed by the merger of two globular clusters.

In the new image, the blue hue represents short wavelengths of visible light, while the red represents longer wavelengths of visible light as well as some near-infrared light. The colors were assigned using Hubble's standard image processing methods, based on the filters through which the observations were made.
