In a new study, researchers from Penn State University and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory analyzed human communications in deep space and found that human transmissions are often directed toward our spacecraft near Mars (bottom left), the Sun, and other planets. Because planets like Mars don't completely block the signal, an extraterrestrial intelligence that happens to be along the path of interplanetary communications—when the stars are aligned from its perspective—could detect the "leak."
